Perimenopause and what you need to know about it

During perimenopause, the time leading up to and around the last menstrual period, you should know these 5 things:

1. Perimenopause symptoms are changeable

Symptoms can start at any time between the early forties and the mid-fifties. For the average woman, symptoms last for three or four years. However, for some, they can go on for ten years or more. And for some, they don't get any symptoms at all.

2. You’re not considered to be menopausal until your periods have stopped and post-menopausal until your periods have stopped for one year

We recommend you track your periods. Use an app or a calendar because you just never know when that last period is going to be.

3. A lot of women notice that their perimenopausal symptoms worsen in the days before their period

In the monthly cycle, this is the time when hormone levels reach their lowest levels, and in perimenopause, those new levels can be extra low. This is going to ramp up existing PMS symptoms, and it's going to make them more intense. Sometimes it can introduce new symptoms that you've never experienced before.

4. Perimenopause causes increased sensitivity

You can be more sensitive to stress, feel more sensitive emotionally, be more sensitive to pain, experience sensitive and more reactive skin, and be more prone to things like sleep issues.

5. Easy self-care strategies can be helpful when dealing with menopausal symptoms

This is one of the most important things to know because introducing some easy self-care strategies can be very helpful.

Drinking more water daily can take the edge off tiredness, and improve concentration and brain fog. And it's time to be kind to yourself. Don't indulge in the compulsion to make life more difficult. Don't beat yourself up. And don't be unreasonably self-critical. It's the time when you should just be kind to yourself.
