Venaforce Horse Chestnut
The Horse Chestnut (Aesculus hippocastanum) is a large deciduous tree, widely cultivated throughout the temperate world. It can live to 250 years old and grow to between 30 and 40 metres high with a domed crown of stout branches. The leaves have five to seven leaflets, each between 13-30 cm long, making the whole leaf up to 60 cm across. The flowers are usually white with a small red spot; they appear in spring standing 10 to 30 cm tall with about 20 to 50 flowers on each. One to five fruit develop on each flower stem. The fruit is a green, softly spiky capsule containing one (rarely two or three) nut-like seeds called conkers or horse chestnuts. Each conker is 2cm to 4cm diameter, glossy nut-brown with a whitish scar at the base.

The use of Aesculus in venous disorders has been recognised for a long time and it has been used in the treatment of various venous conditions since the 19th Century.
(The Horse Chestnut is completely unrelated to the edible Spanish Sweet Chestnut or marron.)

The fruit of the Horse Chestnut tree are collected in areas of Switzerland, Austria and Germany, mainly in parks. The trees are not cultivated but harvesting conforms to GACP. Only freshly fallen fruit is collected, shells removed and the chestnut seeds collected in jute sacks or wooden containers. Bioforce demands that the company receives delivery no later than one week after harvesting. The Chestnuts are processed within 24 to 48 hours.
